You can create DOOH spots inside or outside of the IXM Platform. However, you must create a DOOH playlist for them. Consider the DOOH playlist as a pool for DOOH spots rather than a normal playlist. You don't have to fill this playlist, the system automatically assigns all spots that you add to booking items to it. To run DOOH content, this DOOH playlist must be assigned to all players that you want to play the ads.
In addition to the DOOH playlist, you must create a program scheme and a standard playlist that contains filler content. That is, standard spots that are displayed in between DOOH spots. Filler content comes in handy when your DOOH bookings don't use up the whole playback time. However, if air time is left on a player and no other DOOH spot needs to be played back, you can also configure the player to play a randomly picked DOOH spot. All types of DOOH spots regardless of playtimes, frequency, or share of voice can be fill-up spots except for those with live tags.

Work with DOOH products
Products are a key element of the DOOH module. Products are a practical tool to standardize business proposals, specify higher prices for more targeted or specialized products, and to provide a better overview for clients, sales staff, and reporting.
As an administrator, you can create and manage DOOH products in the IXM Platform. This includes both digital and analog products. While digital advertising is typically the focus of our users, you can use many features just as much for analog advertising. You can see your analog and digital products in the same list and manage them in one central place.

Use different types of content
Read this topic to learn more about standard content, DOOH spots, and programmatic advertisements.
Work with standard content
In general, you manage content in the IXM Platform in playlists. You can combine multiple playlists to show, for example, local and global content on a screen. For each spot, you can specify properties that determine where and when the spot is displayed.
You can use your standard content as filler content in DOOH networks. That is, standard spots that are displayed in between DOOH spots. Filler content comes in handy, when your DOOH spots don't use up the whole playbacktime.
With the DOOH module, you can specify the percentage of air time reserved for DOOH and standard content for a whole network, an individual player, or a location. For example, if you reserve 80 percent for DOOH spots, 20 percent of the air time is reserved for standard spots.
You can create DOOH spots inside or outside of the DOOH module in the IXM Platform. However, you must create a DOOH playlist for your DOOH spots. The system automatically assigns spots that you add to your booking items to this DOOH playlist which must be assigned to all players that you want to play the ads.
We recommend to have only one DOOH playlist per network. |
The DOOH playlist doesn't specify the order in which spots run. Instead, you can specify parameters for DOOH content to calculate how often the spots run. These parameters include:
- Frequency like every 120 seconds
- Live tags like only if the weather is sunny
- Number of playbacks like 20 times per day
- Share of voice like ten percent of the advertising airtime
You can specify the playout in even more detail by combining multiple parameters such as only from 10:00 until 14:00, only on Mondays and Tuesdays, or only on a specific group of screens.
Example: playbacks based on frequency
The frequency parameter specifies the frequency of spot playbacks. In this example, you've set it to every 120 seconds. This means that the player plays the ad every 120 seconds as soon as the currently running filler spot has finished. After the ad has been played, the filler playlist continues.
If filler content is too long or other advertisements lead to a delay of the playback, the system recalculates the frequency. The system can reduce frequency for a specific advertisement as it always considers the correct number of playbacks for each advertisement.
Assign priorities to your ads
If you've sold a lot of advertisement time, conflicts may occur. The system always tries to show every ad at the specified rate. It's possible, however, that the time between playbacks varies.
If you want to play an ad at a specified frequency with a high probability, you can give it a higher priority than other ads. The system plays spots with a higher priority first.
You can work with three priority levels:
- High priority plays spots at a guaranteed frequency.
- Medium priority plays ads at a standard frequency.
- Low priority plays ads if time slots are left. Use this priority for "budget" ads that you sell at a lower price. These ads are only played if enough airtime is available.
Programmatic ads with live tags
The IXM Platform also supports programmatic ads that it plays based on real-time conditions. You can create these conditions via a data source that provides information like weather data or sensor data and that you assign to the spot. For example, you can specify the following real-time conditions:
- Play the ad only if its sunny and more than 26 degrees Celsius outside, based on data from a weather data provider.
- Play the ad only when at least one female person in the age range of 30 to 40 years is standing in front of the screen, based on data from a camera sensor.
- Play the ad only when a flight to London will depart in the next 90 minutes, based on information from a flight information system.
You can mix programmatic ads and other DOOH spots. If all DOOH spots have the same priority level, the system prioritizes programmatic spots based on real-time conditions.

Fill up with advertisements
If airtime is left on a player and no other DOOH spot needs to be played back, you can configure the player to play a randomly picked DOOH spot. All types of DOOH spots regardless of playtimes, frequency, or share of voice can be fill-up spots except for those with live tags.
The current DOOH playback frequency decides which spot is played back as fill-up under the following conditions:
- If a DOOH spot is currently played back, it's not valid as a fill-up spot. A DOOH spot must not be played back to back. This applies to all DOOH spots including fill-up spots.
- If a DOOH spot should be played back according to its next target playtime but was played as a fill-up spot as last spot, it’ll not be played back in this iteration but in the next one if that’s the result of the next spot calculation.
Fill up with advertisements
To set the DOOH fill-up, perform the following steps:
- In the IXM Platform, go to the player configuration or the configuration group:

Fill up with SSP spots
If there's unused DOOH airtime, the player can randomly play SSP spots to fill the time. This is possible if there are no more DOOH or SSP spots that must be played back and if the SSP provides more SSP spots.
By default, filling up with SSP spots is enabled and SSP airtime ratio is set to 0%. This means that unused DOOH airtime is used for SSP if SSP spots are available regardless of SSP airtime. |
To set the SSP fill-up, perform the following steps:
- In the IXM Platform, go to the player configuration or the configuration group:
- For an individual player, go to Channels > Location. Double-click on your player and select Edit next to Configuration in the Edit player dialog.
- For a configuration group, go to Administration > Player > Configuration groups and double-click on the configuration group.

Use spot templates
Grassfish provides spot templates that are particularly useful when you work with DOOH.
For example, you can use these templates if you want to use multiple media files per booking item and display them randomly, based on live tags and categories, or on a specific day of the week.

Use Live Tag Media Viewer spot
Use Live Tag Media Viewer spot
Please contact Grassfish for more information on this solution. |
With the Livetag Media Viewer spot, you can add up to 100 media files to one spot and specify different live tags for each of them.
The spot displays all media that match the current live tag or the specified category in sequence. It's particularly useful when you work with DOOH, because you can only add one spot per DOOH booking item. So, instead of adding one spot with only one media file per booking item, you can add one spot that contains multiple media files that match different live tags or categories per booking item.
What are live tags?
Live tags are special tags that affect the spot playout at runtime. They’re activated and deactivated through (local) web services. This process is triggered by an attached external system that calls the player's web services. Such external systems are, for example, sensors, camera images, external dynamic data like weather forecasts, or external events. The player can be configured to display specific spots that have live tags assigned to them which match the current conditions. For example, you can use a sensor and live tags to display specific advertisements if a female person is standing in front of a screen.
As an example, let’s say you have a screen in a shop window in Vienna. You want to adjust the display of content to the current weather in this location, so that spots may pique the interest of passers-by. Your player is connected to a weather forecast system and you’ve created live tags for different types of weather: sunny, rainy, and cloudy. You want the player to always play the right spot for the current conditions:
- If the weather data says that it’s sunny outside, the player displays advertisements for sunglasses. That is, spots with the live tag “sunny”.
- If the weather data says that it’s rainy outside, the player displays advertisements for umbrellas. That is, spots with the live tag “rainy”.
- If the weather data says that it’s cloudy outside, the player displays neutral spots. That is, spots with the live tag “cloudy”.
What are categories?
As of version 1.1.0, you can also use categories instead of live tags. Categories allow you to specify which spots are played. You can assign categories to specific players, playlists, and spots in the IXM Platform. Players with assigned categories only play content that matches their category.
Prerequisites
Before you configure the spot, ensure that you meet the following requirements:
- If you want to use live tags, you must have a UDC importer to access live data set up. Which UDC importer you need, depends on which kind of data you use.
- You have admin rights in the IXM Platform. Users without admin rights can’t create live tags and categories.
Configure the spot
To configure the Live Tag Media Viewer spot, perform the following steps:
- In the IXM Platform, go to Content > Playlist.
- In the Spot groups pane, select your spot group.
- In the Selectable spots pane, hover over the Live Tag Media Viewer spot and select Edit content. Alternatively, double-click on it.
- Under Spot, specify the Spot duration. Ensure that the spot duration corresponds with other spots that you want to display and the media display duration.
- Optionally, select Background and choose a background color.
- In the Elements pane, click on Media elements.
- Under Media elements, click on the + to add a media element. You can add up to 100 media elements.
- To add a media file, click on Edit and Add medium.
- In the Select media file dialog, select a media group.
- In the Selectable media pane, perform one of the following actions:
- Select an available media file and click Select.
- Click on Upload to upload a new media file to select.
- Under Values, click in the text field and specify a live tag or category for this media element. If multiple media have the save value, they’re played one by one.
