# Assign program schemes

Once you've created your screen layout, you can assign one or more program schemes to it.

If your screen layout is split, you can assign a different program scheme to each section of the screen.

> 
> Split layouts work independently of each other. If you don't assign a program scheme to a section, it remains black.

To assign program schemes, perform the following steps:

1. Go to **Channels > Screen layout**.
2. In the **Screen layouts** pane, select a screen layout.
3. In the **Screen layout view**, click on the layout section that you want to assign a program scheme to.
4. Click **Edit assignment** at the bottom of the pane.
5. In the **Assign program scheme** window, select one of the following options:
  - Select **Create new program scheme** to [create a program scheme](/grassfish/docs/work-with-program-schemes).
  - Select an existing program scheme from the dropdown menu.

6. Click **Save** to save your changes.
